Swimming Opens Season Against Sacred Heart and LIU Post
The Blue Devils swim against UConn and Southern Connecticut next Saturday.
The Central Connecticut swimming and diving team opened the 2018-19 season on Saturday at Sacred Heart. The Blue Devils swam against the Pioneers and LIU Post. Central claimed wins in five events, including three by junior Valentina Gomez.
The Blue Devils swim at UConn against the Huskies and Southern Connecticut next Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
CCSU opened the day with a third-place finish in the 200 yard medley relay. The team of senior Kaitlyn Troy, sophomore Katelyn Mann and freshmen Mariana Espino and Destiny Johnson turned in a time of 1:52.13.
Gomez followed with her first win of the day, taking the 1,000 yard freestyle in a time of 10:51.87. Freshman Hallie Perrin placed seventh in the event, finishing at 11:35.01.
Freshman Jeannette King placed second in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:57.61. Johnson also swam in the event, finishing in 2:13.25.
In the 100 yard backstroke, Troy placed second (1:00.85) and sophomore Erin Brown placed fifth (1:03.78).
Espino and freshman Alex Lindgren finished one-two in the 100 yard breaststroke. Espino won with a time of 1:08.84, just edging Lindgren (1:08.92). Mann placed fifth in the event with a time of 1:10.92.
Gomez turned in her second win of the day with a first-place finish in the 200 yard butterfly. Her time of 2:07.99 easily topped the second-best time. Brown finished fifth with a time of 2:24.94.
King turned in a second-place finish in the 50 yard free with a time of 25.17. Johnson placed seventh, finishing in 26.41.
Troy and Perrin finished neck-and-neck in the 100 yard freestyle. Troy placed fifth with a time of 57.53, just ahead of Perrin (57.78).
King earned her third runner-up finish of the day, placing second in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:09.75. Brown placed fifth with a time of 2:18.58.
Lindgren added a win for the Blue Devils in the 200 yard backstroke. Her time of 2:27.08 was seven seconds ahead of the next finisher. Mann placed fourth with a time of 2:36.66.
Espino placed third in the 500 yard freestyle, finishing in 5:27.83.
Gomez earned her third win, taking the 100 yard butterfly in 58.68. Perrin finished in 1:04.94 to place fifth.
Lindgren placed second in the 200 yard IM, posting a time of 2:13.43, while Espino placed fourth in 2:21.09.
In the day's final event, CCSU placed second in the 400 yard freestyle relay. The team of Troy, Mann, Gomez and King finished in 3:43.81.
