Women's Soccer Posts 1-0 Overtime Victory Over Conference Leader Saint Francis U
Blue Devils are back in action on Sunday at 12 p.m. vs. Robert Morris
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team picked up a key Northeast Conference double overtime victory on Friday, topping league-leader Saint Francis University 1-0 in New Britain. The golden goal came with 1:15 left in the second overtime and came off the foot of freshman Jenna Rae Covello. The 1-0 victory is the fourth 1-0 win of the year for CCSU. Each of their last five games have finished with a 1-0 score, including all four conference games.
The win moves the Blue Devils to 6-7 overall and 2-2 in the NEC. They have won two straight. St. Francis U is now 6-7-1 overall and 3-1 in league play.
A wild series of events led to the eventual game-winning goal for the Blue Devils. Central narrowly missed on a corner attempt as senior Kelly Halligan placed the ball in the box but the Blue Devils could capitalize. After Central kept possession, senior defender Brianna Scaldaferri then sent it back into the box and junior Charlotte Maurer headed it off the cross bar. Covello gathered the rebound and then found the back of the net as the Blue Devils recorded their second straight victory.
The Blue Devils controlled much of the offensive action on the night, holding a significant edge in shots on goal and an overall 21-9 edge in total shots.
Junior goalkeeper Ashley Cavanaugh posted her sixth shutout of the season in the win. The goal was the third of the season for Covello. The Blue Devil defense, led by seniors Jennifer Cafferky and Scaldaferri, was dominant for much of the night.
The Blue Devils return to action on Sunday at 12 noon hosting Robert Morris on the CCSU Soccer Field.
