Women's Soccer Plays to 1-1 Draw on Senior Day
Blue Devils will be the third seed in this week's NEC Tournament
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team played to a 1-1 double overtime draw on Senior Day on Sunday vs. Mount St. Mary's. It was the final home game of the 2014 season for the Blue Devils. Prior to the game the Blue Devils honored the seven members of their senior class.
With the draw the Blue Devils finish the regular season with a 9-5-4 overall record and a 4-2-2 record in Northeast Conference action. They finish the season with 14 points in the league. They also finish the regular season with an impressive home record of 7-1-3, including 7-0-2 in their last nine home games.
NEC TOURNAMENT HEADQUARTERS
Mount St. Mary's ends the season with a 2-16-1 overall record and a 1-6-1 mark in league action.
Central will be the third seed in next week's NEC Tournament, and will play second seed Wagner in the quarterfinal round on Friday. The tournament will be held at top seed Fairleigh Dickinson. Times are to be announced. St. Francis U is the fourth seed.
The Blue Devils took the 1-0 lead on the fifth goal of the season for sophomore Kelly Halligan. Halligan took a corner kick from senior Tori Sousa, off a deflection from junior Claire Walsh, and fired it by the Mount keeper into the top right corner for the 1-0 lead. The goal came just 20 minutes into the first half.
The Mount tied the game with 23:37 left in the second half when Sam Manson scored on a free kick. Following a foul by the Blue Devils, Manson fired the ball to the top left corner of the goal, beating CCSU sophomore goalkeeper Nicki Turley, knotting the score 1-1.
The Blue Devils had several chances to score in the final minutes of regulation, and four solid chances in overtime, but the Mount were able to hold off the charge to secure the draw. A pair of Mount goalkeepers combined to make 19 saves in the match. Turley recorded 10 saves for the Blue Devils in the draw. Central outshot the Mount 32-14 in the match, including 20-11 in shots on goal.
