Cafferky Header Lifts Blue Devils In Double Overtime
Freshman Jennifer Cafferky connected on a header in double overtime on Sunday to defeat LIU Brooklyn.
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team defeated LIU Brooklyn by the score of 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in Brooklyn, NY. Freshman Jennifer Cafferky connected on a header off a Kelly Halligan corner kick with just over eight minutes left to play in the second overtime to give the Blue Devils the victory. CCSU improves to 9-5-3 overall and 4-2-1 in Northeast Conference play with the win. LIU drops to 4-13-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the NEC.
The Blue Devils dominated much of the play throughout the match as they out shot the Blackbirds 21-9 on the afternoon. They also held an advantage in corner kicks 7-3. However, CCSU needed two overtime periods before they could find the back of the net.
With just over eight minutes left to play in the match CCSU earned its seventh corner kick on the day. Sophomore Kelly Halligan sent in an excellent ball from the left corner that found the head of Jennifer Cafferky inside the six-yard box. Cafferky was able to redirect the kick and put it on frame and past LIU keeper Jessica Montrose.
The goal is the second for Cafferky this season and marks the first game-winning goal of her Blue Devil career.
Junior Charlie Branch and senior Tori Sousa paced the offensive attack for the Blue Devils. Branch finished with six shots and Sousa had five. Both players posted one of their shots on goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Nicki Turley improved her record to 8-5-3 between the pipes this season. She finished the match with four saves to record her fifth individual shutout of the season.
CCSU is now 5-1 over its last six games.
The Blue Devils will return to action next Sunday, Nov. 2, when they host Mount St. Mary's. The match is the last home game of the regular season for CCSU and it will be senior day on the CCSU Soccer Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. and fans not in attendance can watch live, for free, on NECFrontRow.com.
