The Blue Devils are off for 12 days before their next game.
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team ran its unbeaten streak to four games with a 3-0 shutout victory at home over Fairfield on Sunday afternoon. Central is 3-0-1 in its last four games, with two of the wins coming via the shutout.
With the victory the Blue Devils are now 4-3-2 overall on the season. They will be off for 12 days before starting Northeast Conference play at Robert Morris on Oct. 3. Fairfield is now 6-2-1 with the loss.
The Blue Devils took the 1-0 lead in the 16th minute on the second goal of the season from senior Julie Lavoie. Junior Cailynn Harding dribbled down the left sideline and fed Lavoie just outside the left side of the goalkeeper box. She beat Fairfield keeper Sophia DeVita to the ball and then found the open net for the early lead.
The lead reached 2-0 in the second half on the first goal of the season from junior Claire Walsh. The play started deep in the Fairfield end as senior Danica Foglio fed classmate Tori Sousa down the left sideline across midfield. Sousa dribbled up the field, stopped, and hit Walsh at the top of the box. Walsh made a quick move to the left and fired the ball over the head of DeVita for the 2-0 lead in the 49th minute.
Sousa scored the third goal of the game for the Blue Devils with just over 10 minutes to play, pushing the lead to 3-0. Sousa was taken down just outside the box and scored on the ensuing free kick. The goal was her team-leading third goal of the season.
Sophomore Nicki Turley played the first 80 minutes of the game for the Blue Devils, making three saves to earn the combined shutout. Senior Corey Medrano played the final 10 minutes for her first action of the season.
The Blue Devils are off for 12 days before they open Northeast Conference play on the road at Robert Morris on Oct. 3 at 3 p.m. Central will also play at St. Francis U on Sunday, Oct. 5, at 1 p.m.
