Women's Soccer Defeats Lehigh 2-1 On Sunday
CCSU will return to action Friday Sept. 19 at home against Maine at 7 P.M.
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team improved to 3-3-1 on the season after defeating Lehigh on Sunday afternoon by the score of 2-1. Lehigh falls to 2-2-1 overall on the season.
Senior Tori Sousa and sophomore Kelly Halligan both recorded their first goals of the season in the victory.
The match featured quality shots and scoring chances from both teams throughout its entirety. Lehigh had 14 shots with 10 of them being on goal. Central tallied eight shots with five of them on net. Lehigh also totaled eight corner kicks to Central's four.
Sophomore goalkeeper Nicki Turley was busy between the pipes recording a career high nine saves in the match, eight of which came in the second half to preserve a 2-1 lead. Turley's effort improved her record to 3-3-1 on the season.
Lehigh began the scoring with a goal in the 19th minute. Grace Correll received a pass from Darby Wiegand at the top of the 18 yard box and her shot deflected off of the body of a CCSU defender and bounced past Turley to give the Mountain Hawks an early 1-0 advantage.
The Blue Devils responded very quickly though, as senior Tori Sousa found the back of the net less than a minute later to knot the score at 1-1. Sousa received a bouncing through ball from teammate Kelly Halligan and shot high over a charging Lehigh goalkeeper and into the net.
CCSU took the lead for good minutes before halftime at the 42:58 mark on an excellent shot by Kelly Halligan. Halligan struck a long range shot from about 30 yards out with her right foot that curled and beat a leaping Lehigh goalkeeper into the upper left portion of the goal making the score 2-1. Senior Christina Boucher had the assist.
Sousa collected two points with the goal, while Halligan recorded a three point day with the goal and an assist. Sousa and Halligan now share the lead in points on the season with four a piece.
