Women's Lacrosse Downs Mount St. Mary's on Senior Day, 8-7
Marissa Soto scored four goals to finish the season with 50.
The Central Connecticut women's lacrosse team defeated Mount St. Mary's, 8-7, on Senior Day at Arute Field. Senior Marissa Soto scored a team-high four goals and became the first player in CCSU program-history to score 50 goals in a season.
The Blue Devils improve to 4-12 overall and 3-4 in the Northeast Conference to close the season. The Mountaineers finish with a 4-11 record overall and 3-4 in the NEC.
The Blue Devils jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first half. Freshman Megan Szawlowski got the Blue Devils on the scoreboard with a free position goal at the 26:48 mark. Soto got her first of the day at the 18:55 mark off a feed from Szawlowski to make it 2-0.
The Mountaineers would score a free position goal from Sammie Knapp at the 17:04 mark to get on the board and make it 2-1, before Kelly Maloney scored on an unassisted effort at the 7:15 mark to tie the score.
Central regained the lead at the 5:31 mark on a free position goal from senior Jessica Giangarra to make it 3-2.
The Mount would tie the game just before halftime on a free position goal from Kate Kinsella as time expired to make it 3-3 at the intermission.
The Mountaineers took their first lead of the game with 29:19 to play when Maloney took a feed from Emily Davis to make it 4-3.
Soto and Szawlowski teamed up for the second time on the day, with Soto taking the pass with 24:46 left and burying her second goal o the day to make it 4-4.
The Mount would get a goal from Knapp off a feed from Davis to make it 5-4 with 22:54 to play, but the Blue Devils would storm back to take the lead for good.
Soto scored a free position goal with 19:51 remaining to tie the game at 5-all before freshman Cameron Ruberti took a pass from junior Kylie Sullivan to make it 6-5.
Central would stretch the lead to two goals after Soto took a pass from freshman Morgan Sinton in front of the Mount goal and converted to make it 7-5 with 17:55 remaining.
Maloney took a pass from Knapp with 16:46 remaining and scored to cut the CCSU lead to 7-6.
Szawlowski scored the eventual game-winner, and her second of the day, off a free position shot with 4:40 to play and make it 8-6.
Mount would score with 18 seconds to play, when Kinsella took a pass from Jannel Daufenbach to make it 8-7, but the Blue Devils would manage to thwart the Mountaineers in the closing seconds and hold on for the win.
Central outshot The Mount, 27-23, and sophomore Jackie Branthover made 13 saves for the Blue Devils to earn the win.
