Women's Lax Tops Mount St. Mary's 9-8
Three Blue Devils score two goals in the victory
Senior goalkeeper Morgan Tullar made a crucial save with under five seconds to play to preserve a 9-8 home victory for the Central Connecticut women's lacrosse team on Friday in New Britain. The win moves the Blue Devils to 5-10 overall and 2-4 in Northeast Conference play. Mount St. Mary's, who entered the game in second place in the NEC, is also 5-10 overall and now 4-2 in league action.
Central led 5-3 at the half but the Mount scored the first three goals of the second half to take a 6-5 lead with 21:42 to play.
The Blue Devils answered with four of the game's next five goals, all scored by different players, to take an 8-7 lead that they would not give up in the 10:59 of the game.
Senior Brigit Hogan scored her second goal of the game to tie the game 6-6, and then the Mount answered to take a 7-6 lead. Sophomore Marissa Soto started a three goal stretch for the Blue Devils that would see them take a 9-7 lead with 7:31 to play.
Following Soto's goal, freshman Kylie Sullivan scored her second goal of the game to make it 8-7 less than a minute later. Then junior Madison Hughes scored her second goal of the game to make it 9-7. The Mount scored with 4:41 to play but the Blue Devils would be able to take over four minutes off the clock in their own offensive end of the field.
With under 30 seconds to play the Mount forced a turnover and had one final chance. That chance was stopped by Tullar, who extended her school record with her 21st career win. She made six saves in the game to record her fifth win of the season.
Hughes, Hogan and Sullivan all scored twice in the win. Sophomore Erin Dougherty, Soto and junior Falynn McCartney all added a goal. McCartney added an assist.
The Blue Devils will finish the regular season with a home game vs. Wagner on Sunday at 1 p.m. Prior to the game the Blue Devils will honor their senior class which includes Tullar, Hogan and classmate Jessica Sudock.
