Women's Basketball Snaps Wagner's Two-Game Win Streak, 83-71, Monday

The Central Connecticut women's basketball team snapped the Wagner Seahawks two-game winning streak, 83-71, completing the 2016-17 series sweep. Sophomore Kiana Patterson drained a career high 22 points on 6-of-10 shooting, including four three-pointers, and 12 fourth quarter points that carried CCSU to the victory.
Central went to the foul line 34 times, making 28 of its attempts (82.4%) compared to the Seahawks' 8-for-14 effort from the stripe.
CCSU improves to 9-14 overall and 8-4 in the Northeast Conference. Wagner drops to 3-20 on the year and 2-10 in the league. Central outrebounded Wagner 32-24, led by sophomore Andi Lydon who had eight boards.
The Blue Devils made their first three attempts behind the arc, while Wagner went 6-of-7 (85.7%) from the field to take an early 15-11 lead over CCSU.
Wagner led 30-25 after the high-scoring first quarter.
CCSU tied up the score 32-32 at the 7:24 mark in the second quarter, and took its first lead, 34-32, two minutes later when senior Aleah Epps found Lydon for another three-pointer. Lydon's three ignited an 11-0 Blue Devil run.
The Blue Devils led 44-41 at the half. They made nine threes and shot 50 percent from the field. Wagner shot 61 percent before the break.
With the Blue Devils up by five, a 6-0 run by the Seahawks gave the home team the 47-46 lead. They led 59-58 after the third quarter after hitting 8-of-10 from the field and outscoring the Blue Devils 18-14.
With the game tied at 68 with 4:02 left in the fourth quarter, the Blue Devils held the Seahawks to only one field goal and outscored Wagner 15-3 to pull away for the 83-71 victory. The Blue Devils scored 13 straight points and went 8-8 from the free-throw line during the four minutes run. The lone Wagner field goal came with eight seconds to play as the Blue Devils improved to 8-4 in NEC play with the win.
Patterson's 22 led all scorers. She also had three steals. Epps scored 16 and added four rebounds and four assists. Lydon had 15 points and eight boards.
The Blue Devils are back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Sacred Heart.
