Softball Takes Game One in Double-Header Against the Knights Sunday
Central plays UConn on Tuesday at 4 p.m. in Storrs, CT.
The Central Connecticut softball team split a pair of games against Northeast Conference opponent Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday afternoon in New Britain, CT. The Blue Devils are now 15-17 overall and 2-6 in leauge play. The Knights are now 11-30 on the season and 3-7 in the NEC.
CCSU won the first game 8-1 led by freshman Alexa Milius who had two runs, two hits, and one RBI on her four at bats. She also totaled two putouts and five assists at third base.
The first score came in the first inning off a single-RBI to left field by Milius sending rookie Carli Backlund home. In the bottom of the second, freshman Carley Stoker hit a two-run homer giving Central a 3-0 lead heading into the third.
The Knights responded after hitting a double followed by a single-RBI to shorten the lead 3-1. In the bottom of the inning, sophomore Sydney Bolan sent one out of the park on her third at bat of the game. Later in the inning, Milius hit a triple to right field followed by junior Emily Cronin being walked. As the catcher threw to second base when Cronin went for the steal, Milius ran home putting CCSU ahead 5-1.
For the rest of the game, Central held FDU to just four hits and no runs. The Blue Devils scored its final three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Freshman Rian Eigenmann stole second base then scored a run off a triple to center field by Backlund.
With runners on first and third, Kristen Ulmer hit a double-RBI to left field sending Milius and Backlund across home plate putting Central ahead by seven.
Stoker pitched all seven innings for the Blue Devils totaling one error and throwing two strike outs. She gave up seven hits and just one run after facing 27 batters.
The Knights took game two winning 10-2 after blowing the game open with six runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 9-2 lead. Central's two runs came from Milius and Ulmer both in the second inning. Both runners were on base when sophomore Samantha Pizzonia stepped up to bat and hit a double-RBI to left field.
Softball faces UConn on Tuesday, April 16 at 4 p.m. in Storrs, CT then plays a double-header at LIU Brooklyn on April 19.
