Softball Wins Over Massachusetts 6-4, Wednesday
Central hosts Providence Thursday at 4 p.m.
The Central Connecticut softball team defeated Massachusetts 6-4 Wednesday afternoon in Amherst, MA. Freshman Rian Eigenmann led the Blue Devils with two hits, two RBIs, and one run.
Massachusetts (18-15, 6-1 A10) got on the board early. With runners on first and second, UMass followed with two pop ups from the next two batters. Back to back single-RBIs put them on the board 2-0 before Central closed the inning.
The Blue Devils (14-15, 1-5 NEC) responded with three runs in the top of the second. Eigenmann had the bases loaded and hit a double out to right field sending juniors Emily Cronin and Giuliana Hathaway across home plate. Sophomore Meg Dugas scored the final run of the inning off a passed ball to give CCSU a 3-2 lead.
UMass tied the game in the third inning when Kaitlyn Stavinoha scored while Hannah Bunker got caught trying to steal second base. Central went ahead 4-3 in the fourth when junior Alicia Bertolino cracked one out of the park.
Both teams were scoreless in the next two innings and the Blue Devils allowed just two hits from Massachusetts. CCSU scored its final two runs in the seventh. Eigenmann scored and a sacrificed fly ball to center field by freshman Alexa Milius sent freshman Carli Backlund home.
Central gave up just one run, one hit in the bottom of the seventh, leaving two UMass runners on base to close the game.
Freshman Kari Marks pitched all seven innings for the Blue Devils. She allowed eight hits, four runs, and threw three strike outs.
