Hawks Hold Off Blue Devils Saturday
Central plays a pair of games at Quinnipiac at 2 and 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
The Central Connecticut softball team dropped two games on Saturday afternoon to Hartford. Game one went to nine innings with the Hawks outlasting the Blue Devils 9-7. Game two was another high scoring game with the Hawks scoring four runs in the sixth to pull out the win 10-9. The Blue Devils are now 6-9 overall and the Hawks improve to a 3-7 record. Central plays a pair of games at Quinnipiac on Wednesday, March 20 at 2 and 4 p.m.
GAME ONE
After giving up a run in top of the first, sophomore Sydney Bolan hit a two-run homer to give Central an early 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the second, freshman Rian Eigenmann recorded a double RBI allowing junior Emily Cronin and junior Alicia Bertolino to hit home plate, pushing the lead 4-1.
The Hawks had two RBIs in the top of the third cutting the lead 4-3. In the bottom of the innings, a fly ball to left field by junior Sarah Ogilvie allowed freshman Alyssa Contreras to cross home plate putting CCSU back up by two runs.
Hartford scored three runs in the sixth to tie the game 7-7. After a scoreless eighth inning, the Hawks had two RBIs in the ninth to win game one.
GAME TWO
Bertolino opened scoring in the second inning with a two-run home run to put Central on the board. Both teams each scored five runs in the top and bottom of the third inning.
The Hawks had a single-RBI from Nicolette Barranger fillowed by a three-run home run by Danielle Rocheleau. Hartford snuck in one more RBI before the Blue Devils closed got the third out.
Central responded with first with a home run by freshman Carli Backlund, and then a three-run home run by freshman Alexa Milius. Before the inning ended, Bertonlino hit a double allowing Ogilvie to hit home, giving CCSU a 7-5 lead going into the fourth.
At the top of the sixth, Central held a 6-8 lead, but the Hawks scored four runs in the top of the six pulling ahead 10-8. The Blue Devils held the Hawks scoreless in the top of the seventh, but only connected on one run before getting its third out.
Sophomore Ashley Antonazzo pitched three innings and freshman Carley Stoker pitched the final four. Stoker threw six strikeouts in the game.
