Central Puts Away St. Bonaventure 9-0 Sunday
Central plays a pair of games today at 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
The Central Connecticut softball team swept opening day on Sunday, Feb. 24 in day one of the Pirate-Spartan Classic. The Blue Devils defeated tournament co-host Norfolk State 7-3 and later beat St. Bonaventure 9-0 in five innings in Norfolk, VA. Central improves to 2-0 on the season, while St. Bonaventure falls to 0-2.
The Blue Devils scored six runs in the the first inning and was held scoreless until the fourth, which the team scored three more runs. Sophomore Sydney Bolan led Central going 2-2 at the plate with four RBIs.
Two of the three first at bats for Central walked. Bolan's first at bat was a single to right field advancing junior Sarah Ogilvie to third and allowing freshman Rian Eigenmann to score. On the next play, Bole stole second base and Ogilvie stole home giving CCSU a 2-0 lead.
Two errors by the Bonnies allowed Giuliana and Bolan to also cross home plate in the first inning. Following those two runs, junior Emily Cronin had an RBI at her first at bat with a single to left field allowing Alicia Bertolino to score. For her second time at bat in the inning, Eigenmann recorded an RBI as sophomore Kristen Ulmer was able to run home giving Central a 6-0 lead by the end of the first.
After going scoreless for three innings, Ogilvie stepped to the plate with two runners on base. She hit the ball deep to left field for a three-run homer.
Sophomore Ashley Antonazzo went 5.0 innings in the circle for the Blue Devils. She totaled five strikeouts, no errors, two walks, and allowed just five hits from St. Bonaventure.
Due to weather conditions, Central's home opener against Seton Hall on Tuesday, Feb. 26 has been canceled. The team travels to Baltimore, MD for the Morgan State Tournament March 1-3.
