Softball Opens 2019 Campaign at Pirate-Spartan Classic
CCSU plays Norfolk State on Sunday, Feb. 24 in its first game of the Pirate-Spartan Classic.
The Central Connecticut softball team will start the 2019 regular season on Sunday, Feb. 24 in Hampton, VA for the Pirate-Spartan Classic. The Blue Devils play a pair of games on Sunday and Monday.
On Sunday, CCSU will face Morehead State and co-host Hampton at 10 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. The Blue Devils then face the Eagles at 10 a.m. at Norfolk State Univeristy followed my another game against Hampton on the Pirate's field at 1:30 p.m. Information for games played at NSU Softball Field can be found here.
Blue Devils head softball coach Breanne Gleason enters the 2019 season in her sixth year at the helm. Gleason led the team to a 10-6 conference record last season qualifying for the Northeast Conference Tournament.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS
As one of the hosts, Norfolk State enters the Pirate-Spartan Classic having played five games standing 1-4 overall including a 1-1 mark on its home field. The Blue Devils haven't faced the Spartans since the 2012 season. Central faced Norfolk in two double-headers winning all four contests.
Morehead State is searching for it first win of the season as it enters the tournament at 0-9. Last season the Eagles finished with a 28-23 overall record and 8-14 conference record and was the third seed in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament. The Eagles fell to number one Eastern Kentucky 2-1, defeated the number four seed Southeast Missouri 4-1, and lost to the two seeded Austin Peay 1-0 in extra innings.
The co-host Hampton enters the tournament at with a 1-2 record after competing in the Elon February Classic last weekend. Central last faced the Pirates in 2015 at the Elon Tournament in North Carolina. The Blue Devils won both matches, the first 3-1 and the other 10-5.
