Men's Track & Field Has a Strong Showing at CCSU Blue Devil Invite
CCSU will host the Northeast Conference championships on May 4-5.
The Central Connecticut track & field team hosted the CCSU Blue Devil Invite on Saturday, April 27, at the CCSU Track & Field Complex. Junior Akiel Smith won two events and the Blue Devils won nine events overall.

Junior Akiel Smith won the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.68. Sophomore Darius Wise (10.97) and freshman Cam Whalen (11.11) finished third and fourth, respectively.
Smith also won the 200 meter dash in 21.98, edging out sophomore Miles Fye-Moore (22.43). Wise and freshman Jovan Dixon place fourth and fifth, respectively, with times of 22.72 and 23.04.
Central finished 1-2-3 in the 400-meter event. Junior Andrew Findley turned in a time of 50.40, and was followed by sophomore Hank Jean-Jacques (52.90) and junior Jack St. Clair (53.11).
The Blue Devils took the top four spots in the 800-meter run. Junior Richard Grudzwick won in 1:58.44, while junior Julio Arredondo (2:00.37) and freshman Timothy McNamara (2:00.47) were just behind. Freshman Andruw Fleming placed fourth in 2:01.63.
Freshmen Robert Moore and Charlie Taubl finished 1-2 in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Moore ran the event in 9:58.11, while Taubl finished in 10:17.38.
Juniors Edwin Alston and Tyrik Henry took the top two spots in the 110 meter hurdles. Alston clocked 15.22 and Henry turned in a time of 15.64.
In the 400 meter Hurdles, senior Matt Baum won the event with a time of 56.68, while junior Quincy Sanchez finished second with a time of 57.08. Freshman Laurenzo Thompkins clocked a time of 57.67 to place fourth.
Freshman Andrew McCarthy won the discus with a throw of 44.32 meters. Junior Nana Kissi was third with 33.67 meters and freshman Ed Radzion was fourth (33.02 meters).
The 4x100 meter relay team of Wise, Creech, Fye-Moore and Dandridge turned in a time of 42.11 to win the event.
The CCSU 'A' relay won the 4x400 meter. Freshmen Jason Walton, Garrett Dandridge, and juniors Richard Grudzwick and Andrew Findley turned in a time of 3:27.53 to capture the event. Baum, Flemming, McNamara and senior Jero Sneh turned in a time of 3:32.20 for the CCSU 'B' relay.
Junior Roberto Piotto placed second in the men's 1500 meter run with a time of 4:04.00. Freshman Elias Field clocked a 4:20.26.
Juniors Kevorni Welsh and Jarred Creech led Central in the long jump. Welsh turned in a leap of 6.71 meters and Creech leapt 6.33 meters to place second and third, respectively.
In the shot put, Kissi had a throw of 13.78 meters to place second, while Radzion had a throw of 12.67 meters for third.
Freshman Trevor Glymph had a mark of 12.91 meters to place second in the triple jump. Freshmen Craig Starkey and Michael Grecco placed second and third in the pole vault with heights of 3.95 meters and 3.65 meters.
Kissi had a throw of 51.55 meters in the javelin, while junior Andrew D'Ovidio (46.95), Creech (39.80) and freshman Andrew McCarthy (38.19) also competed in the event.
The CCSU men posted 99 points and Hartford finished with 71.
