Men's Track Gives Solid Showing in Storrs, Saturday
Central came in eighth out of a field of 10 teams.
The Central Connecticut men's track and field team came in eighth out of a field of 10 teams at the Northeast Challenge on Saturday hosted by the University of Connecticut in Storrs, CT. The team earned a total of 27 points on 19 events scored and set over 12 personal bests at the meet.
In the men's 100 meter dash, junior Akiel Smith won the bronze after completing the event in 10.65 seconds. Sophomore Jarred Creech was right behind him with a time of 10.94 for a 10th place finish. Next in for the Blue Devils was sophomore Miles Fye-Moore in 10.97 followed by freshman Jovan Dixon in 11.44. Both Fye-Moore and Dixon ran personal bests in the event. Rounding out for Central was senior Jero Sneh who crossed the finish line in 11.53 seconds.
Ten Blue Devils ran in the 200 meter dash. Freshman Garrett Dandridge earned the silver medal with an impressive collegiate best of 21.79 seconds. Fye-Moore followed coming in 22.03, another personal best. Rookie Jason Walton broke his previous record in the event with a time of 22.64 followed by junior Edwin Alston who also broke his own record in 22.82 seconds. Sophomore Hank Jean-Jacques and junior Jack St. Clair came in at 22.83 and 23.05 seconds respectively. Freshmen Jovan Dixon and Trevor Glymph ran personal bests with times of 23.06 and 23.61 seconds. Finishing for the Blue Devils was Sneh at 23.62 and freshman Laurenzo Thompkins who completed the event in 24.14 seconds.
Jean-Jacques also set a personal best in the 400 meter dash with a time of 51.40 seconds. St. Clair ran in the event finishing in 51.34 seconds.
Junior Richard Grudzwick led Central in the 800 meter run earning a second place finish with a time of 1:52.36. Junior Andrew Findley followed in seventh place at 1:53.94, a personal best. Freshman Andruw Flemming and Walton also recorded colligate bests in the event with times of 1:58.61 and 2:03.36 respectively.
Junior Julio Arredondo represented CCSU in the 1,500 meter run setting a personal best in the event with a time of 4:02.04. Juniors Tyrik Henry and Quincy Sanchez led the Blue Devils in the 110 meter hurdles with times of 14.97 and 15.01 seconds respectively. Whalen and Thompkins followed with personal bests of their own crossing the finish line at 15.28 and 15.2 seconds.
Whalen recorded another collegiate best in the 400 meter hurdles earning a 15th place finish with a time of 56.51 seconds. Senior Matt Baum also competed coming in 17th place at 56.67.
In the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase, rookies Robert Moore and Elias Fields earning 10th and 11th place crossing the finish line in 10:07.33 and 10:29.12 respectively.
The men's 4x100 meter relay team consisting of Wise, Smith, Fye-Moore, and Dandridge, earned an eighth place finish with a time of 42.88 seconds. In the 4x400 meter relay the 'A' team (Grudzwick, Findley, Dandridge, and Baum) ran in 3:21.00 and the 'B' team (Flemming, Jean-Jacques, Thompkins, and St. Clair) ran in 3:28.18.
In the field events, junior Kevorni Welsh earned a fourth place finish with a leap of 1.93 meters. Welsh then set a collegiate best in the long jump with a height of 6.83 meters. Creech also competed in the event posting 6.17 meters.
Freshmen Andrew McCarthy and Ed Radzion competed in the discus throw recorded tosses of 43.98 and 33.42 meters respectively. In the shot put, Radzion posted 12.20 meters. Junior Nana Kissi also competed, setting a new personal best with a throw of 14.06 meters. Kissi set another collegiate best in the javelin with a toss of 55.48 meters. McCarthy threw a personal best in the javelin as well at 42.84 meters.
