Ward Leads Track and Field at Wagner Invitational
Marquis Ward finished first in the men's high jump.
The Central Connecticut men's indoor track and field team competed for the first time, setting three personal best records, inside the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, NY for the Wagner College Invitational. CCSU's high jump expert, Marquis Ward, started the new year off with a first place finish in the men's high jump. He was the only Blue Devil to compete in the event and leaped 2.00 meters.
Ward also competed in the long jump along with junior Jarred Creech. Ward came in second place with a jump of 6.92m and Creech finished 9th at 6.44 meters.
In the men's pole vault senior Jeremy Hopwood grabbed a third place finish and set a personal best of 4.10 meters. Rookie Craig Starkey also competed in the event and finished fifth at 3.65 meters.
Sophomore Trevor Glymph and junior Tyrik Henry had a nice showing in the men's triple jump. The two recorded 13.13 meters and 12.30 meters respectively. Henry also finished fifth in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.94.
Three underclassmen competed in the men's shot put. Sophomore J'Von Brown finished eighth with a 13.51 meter throw and classmate Nana Kissi set a personal best 13.01 meter throw to earn an 11th place finish. Freshman Ed Radzion threw 11.90 meters to finish in 16th place.
Juniors Julio Arredondo and Roberto Piotto represented Central in the 1 mile race. Arredondo clocked in at 4:27.61 and Piotto finished with a time of 4:32.44.
Junior Qunicy Sanchez set a personal best time and recorded a first place finish in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.28 seconds. Rookie Cam Whalen was not far behind in his first showing coming in second place with a time of 8.45 seconds.
Sophmore Miles Fye-Moore and freshman Garrett Dandridge ran the 200 meter dash. Fye-Moore ran in 22.33 seconds for a second place finish and Dandridge finished third with a time of 22.34.
In the 400 meter dash two CCSU runners, junior Jack St. Claire and freshman Qasim Danazumi, finished in 50.85 and 51.86 seconds respectively. Freshman Jason Walton, junior Andrew D'Ovidio, and senior Matt Baum all competed in the 500 meter dash. Walton clocked in at 1:06.87 followed by Baum at 1:08.38, and D'Ovidio at 1:09.68.
Five CCSU athletes participated in the 800 meter run. Junior Richard Grudzwick came in first place with a time of 1:54.09. Classmates Arredondo and Andrew Findley finished with a time of 1:58.59 and 2:01.31 respectively. The two rookie runners were Andruw Flemming, who clocked in at 2:06.57 and Timothy McNamara at 2:07.37.
Kissi and rookies Ed Radizon and Andrew McCarthy participated in the weighted throw throwing 11.55, 10.48, and 10.22 meters respectively.
Sophomore Charlie Taubl was the only Blue Devil to compete in the 3,000 meter run. In his first time in the event he finished in 19th place with a time of 9:15.36.
The men's 4x400 meter run including four different Central squads. The team finishing first for Central in eighth place was Dandridge, junior Jack St. Clair, senior Akiel Smith, and Grudzwick with a time of 3:25.67.
The Blue Devils pick up on Friday, January 11 at the Amory Track and Field Center in New York, NY for the Ramapo College Indoor Track and Field Season Opener.
