Alston Takes Gold, Grudzwick Breaks 800m School Record at New England Championships
Alston won the 2017 New England 60m hurdle championship, Grudzwick snaps CCSU 800m record at NEICAAA's.
Sophomore Edwin Alston took home the NEICAAA 60 meter hurdle gold medal on Saturday, Feb. 25 at the Reggie Lewis Athletic Complex in Boston, MA. Alston finished the race in 8.00 seconds flat (Watch it here), and won the semifinal race earlier in day with a time of 8.11.
Sophomore Richard Grudzwick broke the CCSU 800 meter run school record, clocking in at 1:49.4 in fourth place. Grudzwick surpassed the old 800m mark of 1:50.99, set back in 2011 by Mohamed Hrezi. During day one of the New England Championships, the sophomore won the preliminary round in 1:53.48.
Following in Alston's footsteps in the 60 meter hurdles, was sophomore Quincy Sanchez who finished eighth overall, with a time of 8.41 in the finals. Sanchez recorded a collegiate personal best time, 8.31, in the semis on Friday.
Rookie Julio Arredondo was the 1,000 meter runner-up on day one of the championships with a time of 2:31.84. Arredondo finished sixth in the final standings, completing the race in 2:30.38.
First year Blue Devil, Roberto Piotto competed in two events for CCSU at the NEICAAA's. Piotto ran a PR in the 5,000 meter run, crossing the checkered stripe at 15:21.67, good for 11th place. The freshman also ran in the 3K event, finishing in 8:57.86.
Rounding out the Central Connecticut New England participants was junior Tyler Latham, and senior Zach Andrews. Latham took 14th in the second heat of the 60 meter hurdles (8:52), and Andrews placed 15th in the 400m dash (50.33).
