Men's Track Sets 10 Personal Records At David Hemery Valentine Invitational Saturday
Sophomore Richard Grudzwick recorded the top finish for the Blue Devils, placing fifth in the 500 meter run with a PR of 1:04.37, putting him at first in the conference rankings.
The Central Connecticut men's indoor track and field team set 10 personal records at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Saturday, Feb.11. Among the record breakers was sophomore Richard Grudzwick, who recorded the top finish for the Blue Devils, placing fifth in the 500 meter run with a time of 1:04.37, putting him at first in the conference rankings.
Yesterday, Feb. 10, the CCSU distance medley relay team of Grudzwick, junior Austin Trainor, and seniors, Malcolm Connor and Joseph Gioielli, won the event and set a new school record with a time of 9:46.12. The previous record of 9:56.67 was held by Jeremy Schmid, Legairre Radden, Michael Waterbury, and Mohamed Hrezi back in 2011.
The mark ranks the DMR team seventh in the regional ECAC standings.
PERSONAL RECORDS
Sernior Will Ribeiro was right behind Grudzwick in the 500 M, finishing at 1:08.19. In the 800 meter run sophomopre, Jero Sneh, clocked in at 7:19.
A pair of juniors and freshman notched personal records across the board in the one mile run on Saturday for Central. Trainor led the way at 4:09.63, qualifying him for the IC4A's, and putting him atop the NEC rankings. Freshman Julio Arredondo proceeded him at 4:19.34, placing him at eighth in the league. Junior Brendan Callahan finished the mile in 4:24.23, and freshman Roberto Piotto rounded out the quartet, completing the event in 4:29.00.
Fellow seniors, Malcolm Connor, Tyler Raymond, and Kendall Walker grabbed career best performances in the 800 and 3,000 meter runs, and 200 meter dash, respectively. Connor ran a 1:53.05 (6th-NEC), Raymond crossed the finish line in 8:30.27 (5th-NEC), and Walker finished in 22:35.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
Senior Zach Andrews, who ran a season best time in the 400 meter dash, 49.12, qualifying him for the IC4A/ECAC's, and ranking him fourth in the Northeast Conference.
Second year Blue Devil, Quincy Sanchez ran a season best time, 8.33 seconds, in the 60 meter hurdles, placing 12th overall. Junior Jevon Elmore secured the 18th spot in the 60 meter dash results, after finishing in 7.05 seconds. Gioielli finished the 800 meter run in 26th place, with a time of 1:52.4.
In the field, freshman Kevorni Welsh, placed 24th in the high jump, jumping 1.85 meters. Classmate, Marquis Ward, hit the 13.19 meter mark in the triple jump, giving him 16th place overall.
The Central Connecticut men's indoor squad will compete at the Northeast Conference Championships on next Friday and Saturday, February 17-18, inside Ocean Breeze Park Track and Field Complex at Wagner College in Staten Island, New York.
