Men's Track & Field Ends Penn Relays with 4x800m Record
The Blue Devils set a new record in the men's 4x800 meter relay in the final day of the Penn Relays on Saturday.
The Central Connecticut men's track and field team opened competition at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, PA on Thursday. Senior Rashad Williams led the Blue Devils on Friday in the second day of competition with his third-place performance in the shot put and the Blue Devils set a new CCSU record in the 4x800m relay on Saturday
Day One
Senior John Krell kicked off the weekend's events by finishing in the top 25 in the 10,000 meter run. Krell crossed the finish line in a time of 30:53.31.
Day Two
Williams led the Blue Devils on day two, earning the bronze in the shot put with a distance of 17.15 meters. His distance bested his own CCSU record by a quarter of an inch.
Also performing well for Central was senior Aaron Radden. He placed 19th in the 100 meter dash, crossing the finish line in 10.78.
In the 400m hurdles, senior Nick Lindblom crossed the finish line in 54.03, good for 28th out of 50. He was followed by junior Ryan Budd who finished in 56.17.
In the relay events, CCSU crossed the finish line in 3:19.41 in the 4x400m. The team consisted of Budd, Lindblom, sophomore Jamal Fruster and freshman Malcolm Connor. The quartette placed 47th of 67 teams.
Day Three
In the final day of competition at the Penn Relays, the Blue Devils notched a CCSU record in the men's outdoor 4x800 meter relay. The team, consisting of senior Mike Waterbury, sophomore Brian Biekert and freshmen Malcolm Connor and Joseph Gioielli, crossed the finish line in 7:38.32 for 13th place out of 31 teams.
Waterbury was on the previous record-holding team that set the record of 7:39.31 in 2011.
The Blue Devils return to action for the NEC Outdoor Championships on May 4-5 in West Long Branch, NJ.
