Men's Track & Field Takes Silver at AIC
The Blue Devils earned nine top-five finishes including three gold performances on Saturday. Freshman Joseph Gioielli finished first in the 800m run.
The Central Connecticut men's track and field team earned second place out of 18 squads at the AIC Yellow Jacket Invitational in Springfield, MA on Saturday. The Blue Devils earned nine finishes in the top-five including three gold performances. Freshman Joseph Gioielli placed first out of 56 runners in the 800 meter run. He crossed the finish line in 1:52.63.
Gioielli was followed in the 800m by classmate Malcolm Connor who placed eighth with a time of 1:56.88.
Senior Nick Lindblom topped the 400 meter hurdle field with a time of 56.09, earning 10 points for Central. CCSU earned a one-two finish in the event with junior Ryan Budd claiming silver with a time of 56.24. Sophomore Jordan Watkins also earned a top-10 spot, crossing the finish line in 59.86.
In the 110 meter hurdles, Watkins took second in 15.30 followed by Lindblom in fourth with a time of 15.61.
Central earned another silver in the 400 meter run when sophomore Jamal Fruster crossed the finish line in 49.53 for eight team points. He was trailed by senior Aaron Radden who placed 17th out of 37 in the event with a time of 52.45.
Junior Colby Delbene, earned bronze in the 1,500m with a time of 3:59.79. He was followed by sophomore Andrew Hill who placed 10th with a time of 4:06.93. Also performing well in the 54-runner field was senior John Krell (13th, 4:07.80) and sophomore Patrick Hubbell (16th, 4:10.74).
The Blue Devils were also successful in the field events with senior Rashad Williams earning the gold in the shot put. He registered 15.82 meters in the event. Williams also placed second in the discus throw with a 46.18 meter mark.
Sophomore Jamie Tobias claimed silver in the high jump event, clearing a height of 1.88 meters.
Other notable performances by Central came from freshmen Derek French, Kendall Walker and John Sudol. French took sixth in the 5,000 meter run (15:37.44), Walker placed ninth in both the 100m dash (11.40) and the 200m dash (23.14), and Sudol took 10th in the triple jump (11.90) and 14th in the long jump (5.94).
UMass Amherst placed first in the meet with a score of 101 followed by CCSU with 86. Sacred Heart took third with 79.50. American International (79) and Amerst (63) rounded out the top five.
The Blue Devils return to action on Saturday, April 13, at both the UMASS Invitational in Amherst, MA and the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic in Lewisburg, PA.
