Welle-Smogeli Named NEC Men's Soccer Rookie of the Week
Central Connecticut men's soccer freshman Jakob Welle-Smogeli was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week it was announced on Tuesday. The rookie tallied both goals for CCSU in a double-overtime setback to Bryant on Sunday.
Welle-Smogeli, who moved to forward for last weekend's match, secured his first collegiate brace during Central Connecticut's home fixture against Bryant. The Norwegian-born Blue Devil opened the scoring in the 30th minute of the NEC match, heading home a free kick off the foot of Sean Gannon. With CCSU facing a 2-1 deficit late in the second half, Welle-Smogeli delivered the equalizer by winning a 1v1 situation in the 88th minute. The freshman defender has three goals to his credit this season with the first one coming in a 4-1 win over Mount St. Mary's on September 30.
Central is home on Sunday for a 3:00 p.m. kickoff against St. Francis Brooklyn.
