Men's Soccer Rally Comes Up Short to FDU, 2-1
Central will be home on Friday night against Mount St. Mary's.
The Central Connecticut men's soccer team rallied late, but came up just short to Fairleigh Dickinson, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon in Northeast Conference action. Freshman Jonathan Maldonado scored his first career goal off a free kick from junior John Wilkins to give CCSU a chance, but the Knights were able to hold on. The Blue Devils are back in action on Friday with a home game against Mount St. Mary's at 7:00 p.m.
CCSU slips to 0-9-1 overall and 0-3 in the NEC, while Fairleigh Dickinson is now 4-5-3 overall and 1-1-1 in conference play.
The Knights opened scoring in the 12th minute when Ahu Obhakhan lifted a shot past the keeper on the left wing off a touch pass from Fredinho Mompremier.
FDU doubled the lead on a header by Anthony Herbert off a free kick by Jeremy Despringre at the 47:41 mark to increase the lead 2-0.
At the 81:37 mark, Wilkins took a free kick outside the box on the left side. The ball skipped through traffic to find Maldonado who ripped the ball to the bottom left corner of the net to cut the lead 2-1. Freshman Panos Ravanis had a shot just before time expired, but his attempt was deflected high and FDU would hold on for the win.
The teams finished level on shots, 10-10. Senior Carson D'Ambrosio made two saves in the goal for the Blue Devils and came off his line to snuff out several FDU chances on the day.
Central hosts Mount St. Mary's on Friday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m. at CCSU Soccer Field in New Britain, CT. The women's soccer team will play host Bryant at 4:00 p.m. as part of a soccer doubleheader.
