Men's Soccer Shuts Out UMass Lowell on Tuesday
Nick Velleca posts his first career shutout while making four saves
The Central Connecticut men's soccer team posted a 1-0 shutout victory on the road at UMass Lowell on Tuesday night. With the victory the Blue Devils are now 2-2 overall on the season. The Blue Devils will return to action again on Sunday when they play on the road at Yale beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Junior goalkeeper Nick Velleca posted his first career shutout in a Blue Devil uniform in the win. He made four saves to help Central even its record at 2-2.
Senior Jenilo Soares scored his first goal of the season in the 80th minute to give Central the lead. He took a loose ball inside the box off of a Blue Devil corner and beat the Lowell keeper for the game's only score.
Each keeper made four stops in the match. Velleca had two in each half to preserve the shutout, the second of the season for the Blue Devils who also topped Stony Brook 1-0 earlier this season. With the win over Lowell the Blue Devils move to 2-0 against the America East this year and haven't allowed a goal in 180 minutes of action.
Lowell held a 15-12 advantage in total shots but it was the Blue Devils with the 5-4 edge in shots on goal. They also held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Central, now 2-2 on the season, plays at Yale on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
