Bio

Eric Wheeler joined the Central Connecticut men’s basketball staff prior to the 2017-18 season as the Director of Basketball Operations.

Before coming to CCSU, Wheeler was an assistant coach at Suffolk University under head coach Jeff Juron. Wheeler joined the staff prior to the 2015-16 season and during his time with the Rams he helped the squad extend its GNAC Tournament appearances streak to five straight. He also mentored two All-GNAC Second Team selections, a 1,000 point scorer and a member of the GNAC All-Sportsmanship Team. While Wheeler was on staff with the Rams, the program earned its first GNAC Institutional Sportsmanship Award and was recognized with an NABC Team Academic Excellence Award for the first time. 

While at Suffolk, Wheeler was named a Graduate Assistant for the Athletics Department in 2016-17 and assisted at the Michael & Larry Smith Fitness Center and the Rams' equipment room, while pursuing a Master’s in Administration of Higher Education. He is on track to finish his studies in December, 2017.

Wheeler broke into the coaching ranks with a one-year stop at Fitchburg State in 2014-15. He helped the Falcons post a 14-win improvement on their way to an ECAC New England Tournament Championship run. Wheeler handled duties as recruiting coordinator, as well as, organizing practice and game plans for Fitchburg.

A 2012 graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Wheeler earned his Bachelors of Science degree in Sports Management from the Isenberg School of Management. Wheeler was a team manager for the Minutemen from 2009-12 and assisted with practices, one-on-one player development and film editing.

A native of Boxford, MA, Wheeler has worked several summer basketball camps and clinics for Hoop Group and Five Star, along with starting the Team W.H.E.E.L.S. AAU team and serving as coach and team administrator.
