Men's Hoop Drops Home Opener to Rider
Blue Devils now 0-4 on the season
The Central Connecticut men's basketball team dropped to 0-4 on the season with a 89-73 loss at home to Rider on Saturday night. The game was the home opener for the Blue Devils. Rider is now 1-2.
Junior Kyle Vinales led the offense with 16 points, but Central shot just 42.9 percent from the firld and 22.2 percent from three in the game. The had 15 turnovers.
Freshman Khalen Cumberlander added 15 points and junior Juwan Newmen had his first double-double as a Blue Devil with 12 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
Central led 12-3 early as Rider struggled from the field, but the Broncs responded in the first half and took a 44-28 lead at the break.
Central could get no closer than nine in the second half as the Broncs posted their first victory of the season. They outrebounded Central 39-32, including 11 offensive rebounds. They had 40 points in the paint, and had 28 points off the 15 CCSU turnovers.
Junior Faronte Drakeford had 14 points and eight rebounds for the Blue Devils.
The two teams combined for 59 free-throws and 49 fouls in the game. Rider was 23-of-30 from the line, the Blue Devils hit 21-of-29 including 8-of-9 from Vinales.
Zedric Sadler had 21 points and five rebounds to lead Rider. Daniel Stewart had 17 points and 10 boards while Anthony Myles had 19 points and six rebounds.
