Football Ranked in Both Final FCS Top 25 Polls
CCSU posted a program-record 11 wins during the 2019 season.
Central Connecticut earned a final ranking in both FCS Top 25 polls to wrap up the 2019 season it was announced Monday. CCSU was ranked No. 22 in the season-ending American Football Coaches Association FCS Coaches' Poll and 23rd in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25. The Blue Devils went 11-2 overall and won the Northeast Conference championship to qualify for the FCS playoffs.
Central won a school-record 11 games and tied the school-record with its eight-straight wins to end the regular season, finishing the regular season 11-1 with their only loss coming on the road to FBS member Eastern Michigan. The Blue Devils' loss to Albany in the FCS playoff was its only defeat against another FCS program. They were ranked as high as #17 in the national polls, the highest ranking in school history. CCSU also had six road wins, tied for the most in the nation, while posting an unblemished NEC record for the second time in three seasons.
Head coach Ryan McCarthy was honored as NEC Co-Coach of the Year and Gridiron Club of Greater Boston's Division I Coach of the Year after leading CCSU in his first campaign. He also finished fifth in the voting for the Eddie Robinson Award as the FCS National Coach of the Year. Individually, 12 Blue Devils earned postseason All-Northeast Conference honors, including senior Aaron Winchester was named the league's Offensive Player of the Year. Winchester was also a finalist for the Walter Payton Award as the national player of the year.
