McCarthy Finishes Fifth in National Coach of the Year Voting
First year head coach led the Blue Devils to a school record 11 wins
Central Connecticut head football coach Ryan McCarthy finished fifth in the voting for the Eddie Robinson Award. The FCS National Coach of the Year Award is presented annually by STATS. McCarthy was announced as one of 15 national finalists on Nov. 25.
McCarhty led the Blue Devils to a school-record 11 wins during the 2019 season, a perfect Northeast Conference season and the school's second trip to the FCS playoffs. Central finished 11-2 overall after a loss to Albany in the playoffs. It was the only loss of the season by the Blue Devils to another FCS program.
McCarthy received nine first place votes, 19 second place votes, 21 third place votes, 21 fourth place votes and 16 fifth place votes. Sacramento State's Troy Taylor was named the Eddie Robinson Award winner after leading his team to the Big Sky conference title and an appearance in the FCS playoffs.
Earlier this fall McCarthy was named the NEC Co-Coach of the Year as well as the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston's Division I Coach of the Year.
Central tied the school-record with its eight-straight wins to end the regular season, finishing the regular season 11-1 with their only loss coming on the road to FBS member Eastern Michigan. They were ranked as high as #17 in the national polls, the highest ranking in school history.
