Baseball Falls at Hartford in Non-Conference Action
Blue Devils host Wagner for final weekend of NEC play.
The Central Connecticut baseball team played its final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday, falling 10-0 at Hartford on Fiondella Field. The Blue Devils will host Wagner for a four-game Northeast Conference series beginning Thursday.
The Blue Devils are now 20-31 overall.
Hartford scored a pair of runs in the first inning to take a lead it would not relinquish. With runners on first and second base, the Hawks attempted a double steal and a throwing error allowed both runs to come around to score and make it 2-0.
A solo home run by Chris DelDebbio in the third made it 3-0, before Hartford would add to its lead with five runs in the fourth inning. TJ Ward and Erik Ostberg each had two-RBI hits in the inning to power the Hawks lineup.
The Blue Devils opened the sixth with back-to-back singles by sophomores Mitch Guilmette and Nick Garland before a ground out would move the runners to second and third base with one out. Hartford starter Justin Cashman would work out of the jam by getting a strike out and a ground out.
The Hawks would add a run on an infield single and another on an error in the seventh to close out the scoring in the game for the final margin.
Guilmette, Garland, seniors Corey Lerche and Matt Martinez and junior Nick Landell each had a hit for CCSU. Lerche doubled to lead off the second to give Central an extra-base hit.
Freshman Tom Curtin started for CCSU and threw 3.0 innings. He was charged with three runs, just one earned, on two hits with two walks.
DelDebbio had three hits and two runs batted in as the Hawks totalled 10 hits.
Cashman got the win, throwing 6.0 innings and allowing just four hits. He struck out three and walked one.
