Baseball Falls to St. Bonaventure in Series Finale
Hinckley collects two hits for Blue Devils.
The Central Connecticut baseball team fell to St. Bonaventure, 6-2, on Sunday in the third game of their opening weekend series in Port Charlotte, FL. Junior Andrew Hinckley scored a run and collected two hits for the Blue Devils.
Central falls to 1-2 on the season and the Bonnies improve to 5-2.
The Blue Devils scored two runs in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Dean Lockery drew a walk and moved to second on a single by classmate Ryan Costello. A single by Hinckley loaded the bases. A two-out error on a ball to centerfield, allowed Hinckley and Costello to score and make it 2-0.
After Central left the bases loaded in the third and fourth innings, the Bonnies managed to score a run in each inning to tie the game. Eric Willis led off the St. Bonaventure third and came around on a two-out single from Cole Peterson to make it 2-1.
Tyler Walter led off the fourth for St. Bonaventure with a walk and then stole second base. A double by Matt Eastman brought him home to tie the game, 2-2.
The Bonnies took the lead with two runs in the sixth. Tyler Walter led off with a double and scored on a triple by David Vaccaro. A sacrifice fly by Tommy LaCongo scored Vaccaro to make it 4-2.
St. Bonaventure tacked on a pair of runs in the seventh for insurance to make it 6-2.
Senior Casey Brown started for CCSU and went 5.1 innings. He struck out five, while allowing four runs on six hits.
Central finished with seven hits, led by Hinckley who had two singles. Junior Nick Landell singled and stole a base.
Aaron Phillips started for St. Bonaventure and allowed two runs in 5.2 innings. He walked four and gave up five hits, while striking out one. Nate Grant got the win after pitching a perfect inning with one strikeout.
The Blue Devils travel to Navy for a three-game series beginning on Friday, March 4.
