Baseball Falls to Sacred Heart in Regular-Season Finale
Central's four seniors honored on Senior Day.
The Central Connecticut baseball team fell to Sacred Heart in the finale of the four-game Northeast Conference series, 10-1, on Saturday afternoon at CCSU Baseball Field. Central's four seniors (Jeff Buck, Nick Coro, Jesse Frawley, Dominic Severino) were recognized on Senior Day in a pre-game ceremony.
Sacred Heart jumped out to a quick lead after scoring a run in the first off of Frawley, CCSU's starter. With two outs, Zack Short walked and moved to third on a single by P.J. Sorrento. On the next batter, Sorrento got caught in a run-down between first and second base allowing Short to score and make it 1-0.
The Pioneers opened the second with consecutive singles and a sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position. Keaton Flint brought in a run with a groundout to shortstop and a bunt single by Kenny Byram scored another run to make it 3-0.
Sacred Heart added a run in the third and that was all starter Robbie Maguire would need. The right-hander held CCSU without a hit until the fourth inning when sophomore Franklin Jennings led off with a double down the right field line. He moved to third on a groundout and came in to score on a single by junior Ian Glassman to make it 4-1.
That would be all the offense the Blue Devils would muster against the Pioneers on the day, however. SHU tacked on three runs in the fifth thanks to a pair of homeruns by Byram and Short before adding a run in the seventh and two more in the ninth for the 10-1 margin.
Maguire got the win, throwing 7.0 innings and allowing just one run on five hits with five strikeouts. Byram finished with three hits and two RBIs, while Short added three RBIs on two hits.
Frawley started for Central and took the loss after throwing three innings. Jennings collected two hits for the Blue Devils.
The loss concludes the season for CCSU, which finishes with a record of 17-31 overall and 9-15 in the Northeast Conference. Sacred Heart will enter the NEC Tournament with a record of 20-29-1 overall and 13-11 in conference play.
