Baseball Falls to Mount St. Mary's, 5-1, on Friday
Teams to conclude series on Saturday with single game at 1 p.m.
The Central Connecticut baseball team fell to Mount St. Mary's, 5-1, on Friday in Northeast Conference action. Due to weather, the second game of the scheduled doubleheader was postponed until Saturday afternoon.
The Blue Devils got off to a fast start and took an early lead when sophomore Franklin Jennings led off with a homerun to right-centerfield. The homerun was Jennings' first career blast.
The Mountaineers got three runs in the bottom of the second. Tyler Post doubled with one out and Zach Call singled to bring him home. Brendan Dabagian singled to centerfield to move Call to third. Jay Knight put the ball in play in the next at bat, but a fielding error allowed Call to score and Dabagian to move to third. A sacrifice fly by Ryan Owens made it 3-1 before CCSU ended the inning.
CCSU threatened in the top of the fourth when it loaded the bases with no outs. Freshman Ryan Costello and junior Connor Fitzsimons opened the frame with consecutive singles. After a pitching change, freshman Dean Lockery loaded the bases by reaching first on a bunt single. Mount managed to get out of the inning unharmed by getting a force out at home on the next batter and then turning an inning-ending double-play.
The Mount tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth. Owens led off with a single and scored on a double by Andrew Clow. A single moved Owens to third base, who then scored on a Brian Parreira sacrifice fly to make it 5-1.
Jordan Lawson picked up his second win of the series with four innings of scoreless relief for the Mount. He retired the final 12 batters he faced after allowing the bunt single. The win improved Mount St. Mary's to 4-15 overall and 2-1 in NEC action.
Jennings, Costello and Lockery each went 2-for-3 for the Blue Devils at the plate. Senior Dominic Severino started for Central and allowed three runs, but just one earned. The loss dropped CCSU to 7-12 overall and 1-2 in NEC play.
The teams will conclude the four-game series with a single game on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Straw Family Stadium.
