Cambridge, MA – The records came crumbling down on the first evening of the NEC Swimming and Diving Championships as Saint Francis (PA) took home first place honors in the 200 medley relay and the 800 freestyle relay in record times to kick off the four-day event. The Red Flash's time in the 200 medley relay of 1:43.81 represents a new conference record, shattering the previous record of 1:43.53, which the team set at last year’s championship. They followed up this performance in the 800 freestyle relay as swimming to a time of 7:25.75, breaking the previous record by nearly seven seconds.
After two events Saint Francis (PA) leads with 80 points, followed by Central Connecticut with 66. Bryant stands in third with 64 while Wagner is within reach with 60. Mount St. Mary’s finishes day one with 58 points while Sacred Heart (52) and St. Francis (NY) (48) round out the field of seven.
In the first event of the night, the Saint Francis 200 medley team of Becky Peer(Chelsea, Canada/Philemon Wright), Elise Lofgren(Molnlycke, Sweden/Hulebacks), Libby Francis (Dundee, Scotland/Grove Academy), and Alicia Ford (Whitney Point, NY/Whitney Point) successfully defended their title, finishing the event in a new conference record of 1:43.81. Bryant’s Casey Ostrander (Yarmouthport, MA/Barstable), Brianne Dwyer (Hicksville, NY/St. Anthony’s), Kaitlin Buckley (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) and Taylor DeBeaver (Denver, CO/Regis) finished second, coming in at 1:45. The Central Connecticut relay team of Alex Czaplicki (North Haven, CT/North Haven), Kristen Malski (Stratford, CT/Laurelton Hall), Katie Lang (Monroe, CT/Masuk) and Helene Neuhaus (Westport, CT/Staples) touched the wall at 1:45.89 to take home the bronze.
After a record-breaking performance in the 200 medley relay, the 800 freestyle relay proved to be just as exciting as it came down to the wire between Saint Francis (PA) and Central Connecticut. But it was the Red Flash that took home gold by .05 of a second as Megan Collins (Monroeville, PA.Oakland Catholic), Lofgren, Ford and Jenny Demjanenko (New Albany, OH/Gahanna-Lincoln) touched the wall in a time of 7:25.25. Central finished just behind in 7:25.80 with the team of Czaplicki, Lang, Allison Rasile (Branford, CT/Branford) and Taylor Friedmann (Berlin, CT/Berlin). Wagner took home their first medal of the night as Sarah Menendez (Land ‘O Lakes, FL/Wharton), Alexandra Cooney (Port Jervis, NY/Minisink Valley), Kristiana Kalibat (Princeton, NJ/Princeton) and Meredith Ketchmark (Plainsboro, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro) finished in third with a time of 7:35.06.
The NEC Swimming and Diving Championships will resume tomorrow at 11:00 AM.
