Department of Athletics Spring Golf Outing

The Central Connecticut Department of Athletics held its annual spring golf outing on Friday afternoon, May 10.  The Blue Devil Classic is the largest fundraising event of the year for the department.

A field of 150 golfers took part in the event, with current coaches and administrators joining alumni and donors for 18 holes of scramble golf.

The event was held on the white and red links of Stanley Golf Course in New Britain, CT.
Following the round, participants returned to campus for an awards ceremony and dinner held in the Constitution Room of Memorial Hall.

Among the awards at the dinner were the Letter Winner of Distinction and Honorary Letter Winner honors.

Al Barbarotta ‘74 and William Detrick ‘50 received the Letter Winner of Distinction award for 2013.  Barbarotta was a co-captain of the 1972 football team.  A two-way player who saw action at offensive guard and at linebacker on defense.  In 1971 he helped the team to a 7-3 record on the field.  Following graduation he received an invitation to try out with the New England Colonials of the Atlantic Coast Football League.

Detrick earned 12 varsity letters as a student-athlete playing football, basketball and baseball.  He returned to CCSU as the head basketball coach, a role he held for 29 years.  During that time he posted an impressive 468 victories, which still stands as CCSU's all-time record.  In honor of his achievements as a player and coach CCSU's gymnasium is named in his honor.  Since leaving CCSU, Detrick has coached golf at Trinity College for 23 seasons and in that time he has been honor as NESCAC Coach of the Year on three occasions.

Zdzislaw B. Kremens, Ph.D., D.Sc., has been Dean of the School of Engineering and Technology since 1998 and he is the 2013 Honorary Letter Winner.  Previously, he was interim dean of the School and a visiting professor from the Technical University of Wroclaw in Poland, where he was a professor and vice president of academic and student affairs.

Dean Kremens oversees a School that has been designated a “Center of Excellence” by Connecticut’s Board of Governors of Higher Education. He has been instrumental in strengthening and expanding the School’s academic offerings, and in increasing student enrollment from some 600 in 1997 to its current level of almost 1,200.  Since April 2006, the School has offered the BS in Mechanical Engineering.  The School currently offers bachelor’s and/or master’s degrees in engineering, engineering technology, technology, technology and engineering education and bimolecular sciences/biotechnology.

Dean Kremens has authored or co-authored three books and more than 60 papers about the control, simulation, and analysis of electric power systems. A professor of electrical engineering, specializing in electric power systems, he also teaches courses in telecommunication, electronics, and electro-mechanical converters. Dr. Kremens has been active in many academic and scientific organizations, including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He currently serves as assistant editor of the International Journal of Power and Energy Systems and as a member of the Power and Energy Systems Committee of the International Association of Science and Technology for Development of Calgary, Canada.
