Rafter Sets New PR, Women's Team Finishes Third at Mini Meet

Heading into Friday's CCSU Mini Meet, Angie Rafter's personal best 3K time was 09:51. The senior runner bested that time by 21 seconds on Friday, setting a course record and finishing first at the CCSU Mini Meet with a 9:30.8 finish.

KEY MOMENTS

  • Similar to her run at the Ted Owen Invitational a few weeks ago, Rafter did not run away with things to start the 3K. Throughout most of the course, she paced herself with the top runners, making sure to keep a short distance ahead. After turning the final corner, Rafter went into second gear, blowing past the other runners and easily cruising to a first place finish. Rafter said after the race that she was surprised to see such a large pod of runners at the front for most of the race.
  • Rafter's classmate, senior Ashley Dana, was the next Blue Devil to cross the finish line and was able to secure another top 10 finish for the team. She placed eighth with a final time of 9:53.0, only .8 seconds faster than the ninth place finisher.
  • Brooke Morabito and Kaitlyn Stevens each had finishes in the 20's for CCSU. Morabito finished 21st with a 10:15.0 time while Stevens placed 25th at 10:19.2.

NOTES

  • Rafter's 9:30.8 finish time is a course record for the Blue Devils, a phrase Rafter is most likely pretty familar with.
  • Dana crushed her previous personal best in the 3K. Her previoustime was 10:25.2, making her finish on Friday more than 32 seconds better than her time in 2019.
  • Rafter also won the previous CCSU Mini Meet in 2019, and placed fifth the year before that.
  • Dana has been the second Blue Devil to cross the finish line in two straight races, finishing third at the Ted Owen Invitational and 23rd at the New England Championships.

The Blue Devils will be competing at Stanley Quarter Park in just eight days for the magnum opus of its season, the Northeast Conference Championship. CCSU women's cross country has claimed the first place title for the past three seasons.
