Women's Cross Country Sweeps NEC Weekly Honors
Angie Rafter and Ashley Dana earned NEC Athlete and Rookie of the Week honors.
Sophomore Angie Rafter and freshman Ashley Dana of the Central Connecticut women's cross country team swept the conference weekly awards as it was announced on Thursday afternoon. Rafter earned her third Athlete of the Week award, while Dana was named the Rookie of the Week. The duo helped the Blue Devils to a fourth place finish out of 14 teams in the CCSU Mini Meet.
Rafter has been the NEC's best finisher in three of the four races she competed in this year. She navigated the 3k course at New Britain's Stanley Quarter Park in 10:12.13 to place fifth in a field of 99 that included runners from Providence, Boston College, Dartmouth, New Hampshire, UMass Lowell and conference rival Bryant.
Dana collects her first rookie honors after having the best time of NEC freshmen last weekend. The Coginchaug product competed in the 99-runner field at CCSU's Mini Meet to place 29th with a 3k time of 10:54.0. She averaged a 5:51 mile to become the fourth Blue Devil to cross the finish line.
A 13th place finisher at the 2017 NEC Championships her freshman year, Rafter and the Blue Devils will look to threaten for gold on Saturday, Oct. 27 at the Conference Championships at Bryant University in Smithfield, RI.
