Kaprelyan's Triple Double Leads Volleyball Past Sacred Heart, 3-1
CCSU hosts Bryant on Friday night.
Junior Madelyn Kaprelyan posted her third triple-double of the season and helped the Central Connecticut volleyball team by Sacred Heart, 3-1, on Saturday. Kaprelyan had a match-high 23 kills with 19 assists and 11 digs as CCSU improved to 5-1 in Northeast Conference play and 8-9 overall. Sacred Heart slipped to 10-6 overall and 3-2 in the NEC. CCSU won by scores of 25-22, 25-27, 25-20, 25-15.
CCSU next hosts Bryant on Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
Kaprelyan hit .410 in the match and added four service aces and seven total blocks. Junior Morgan Woycik and sophomore Emma Henderson added 10 kills each. Junior Erin McDermott had a team-high 28 assists.
Central built a 6-2 lead in the opening set but the Pioneers would rally to tie the game at 14-14. CCSU came back with five straight points, senior Raquel Quirarte had a pair of kills in the run. CCSU would maintain the lead from there and close the set out with a kill by Kaprelyan.
SHU led by as much as 12-3 in the second set before the Blue Devils would mount a late rally to tie the set at 24-24 following a kill by Henderson. CCSU took a lead following a Pioneers error, but after a timeout SHU responded with three straight points to even the match.
The third set was close throughout, but Central would score five straight to break a 12-12 tie and take the lead for good. Kaprelyan had two aces in the spurt and SHU would get within 19-18 before kills by Henderson and Kaprelyan would set up set point. The Blue Devils took a 2-1 lead after an SHU error.
Kaprelyan had back-to-back kills to start a 4-0 run in the fourth set that helped CCSU go ahead 5-1. The Blue Devils would push the lead to as much as 19-11 after senior Kaitlyn Kushman served three straight points. The Blue Devils would maintain the lead and close out the match on a SHU service error to win.
