Volleyball Blocks Bryant in NEC Opener
Junior Emily Cochran posted a match-high 21 kills to push the Blue Devils to 1-0 in the NEC.
The Central Connecticut volleyball team defeated Bryant 3-1 on Saturday afternoon in Detrick Gym. The match was the Northeast Conference opener for both teams. The Blue Devils improve to 9-5 on the season and 1-0 in the NEC.
The Blue Devils captured the opening set of the match by a score of 25-17. The seven-point margin of victory was the largest difference in any set of the match. Junior Jamie Rademacher led the offense for the Blue Devils with four kills and a 1.000 hitting percentage in the set. Junior Emily Cochran also had four kills in the set.
After dropping the second set, the Blue Devils rallied to win the third with extra points. Central trailed the Bulldogs, but the Blue Devils scored three straight points to win the set 26-24. Cochran recorded a set-high seven kills and junior Blaike King connected for a .455 hitting percentage and five kills of her own.
Central found themselves trailing once again in the fourth set, but they came alive late and took the match with a 25-22 set victory. Senior Sara DeLacey posted a .444 hitting percentage and four kills in the set. She also recorded her fourth solo-block of the match. In addition to her four solo-blocks, DeLacey also contributed to another pair.
Joining DeLacey at the net were junior Jennifer Waddill and Rademacher, each contributed to three blocks in the match. Senior Danielle Gasser and Cochran also contributed to the Blue Devils 10 team blocks.
In addition to good blocking defense, four Blue Devils posted double-digit digs including Gasser, Cochran, King and Schumacher who finished with a match-high 16.
Cochran finished with a match-high 21 kills. King, DeLacey and Rademacher also posted double-digit kill totals. Rademacher's 11 kills came on 18 attacks as she finished with a match-high .556 hitting percentage.
The Blue Devils return to action tomorrow in Detrick Gym as they host NEC and in-state rival Quinnipiac at 1 p.m. That game along with many other CCSU volleyball games this season will be streamed live on CCSUBlueDevils.tv.
