Rafter Breaks 800M Program Record, Women's Track Takes First
Central won the CCSU Blue Devil Invite by margin of 77 points on Saturday.
Central Connecticut freshman Angie Rafter set a new CCSU 800 meter run school record to highlight a spectacular showing by the women's track and field teams at the 2018 CCSU Blue Devil invite. Rafter soared across the finish line as a program best 2:12.34 surpassing Adrienne Pitts' old record time of 2:12.48 set back in 1982.
Central won with a total team score of 215 points. Hartford finished second with 138 points and Franklin Pierce was third with 110 points.
Paced by the rookie, sophomore Megan Brawner set a new personal record time of 2:12.84 and finished as the runner-up.
Winning the 1,500 meter run was senior Brittany Mendelson with a top time of 4:57.41. Sophomore Gianna D'Amato won the javelin with a throw of 39.81 meters and junior Abrah Toomey placed third with a mark of 34.49 meters.
Competing alone in the 4x100 meter relay was sophomore Erica Snape, junior Sierra Nesmith, senior Melissa Wolliston and junior McKenna Kilian who finished with a season best time of 47.91 seconds.
Juinior McKenna Kilian took first in the long jump with a time of 5.52 meters. Junior Sierra Nesmith placed second with a mark of 5.38 meters.
Wolliston won the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.71 seconds. In the 3,000 meter run, freshman Kiley Rodriguez won with a time of 10:54.71. Senior Olivia Mondo placed second with a time of 11:01.73. Finishing in fifth place was junior Morgan Ricci who turned in a time of 11:55.94.
Senior Alleah Red placed second in the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.90 seconds and sophomore Arianna Taft followed in third place with a time of 28.03 seconds.
Freshman Kailyn Accetura ran a personal best 800 meter time of 2:41.65 to place eighth overall.
In the shot put, sophomore Valeria Hernandez threw for a personal record, second place, distance of 11.33 meters and sophomore Celine Delice took fourth with a mark of 8.33 meters.
Sophomore Erica Snape won the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.95 seconds. Senior Alleah Red finished in second place after clocking in at a personal best time of 13.46 seconds.
Junior Sierra Nesmith won the 400 meter hurdle event with a time of 1:00.97.
The CCSU 4x400 meter relay team of Snape, Brawner, Rafter and Taft outlasted Hartford to win with a time of 4:11.79.
All four standings in the discus throw went to the Blue Devils. Toomey led the quartet with a first place collegiate best mark of 34.08 meters. Hernandez was second (32.66m), Delice was third (27.7m) and D'Amato was fourth with a personal record throw of 24.23 meters.
In the hammer throw, Toomey demolished her old personal record with a second place mark of 45.68 meters. Hernandez placed fourth with a personal record of 38.55 meters and Delice finished sixth (31.44m).
Following the final tune up, CCSU women's track and field will travel to Emmitsburg, MD for the 2018 Northeast Conference Championship on May 5-6.
