Women's Track and Field Opens Outdoor Season at Bryant on Sunday
Wolliston leads the Blue Devils with a pair of wins on Sunday
The Central Connecticut women's track and field team opened the 2017 outdoor season at the Bryant University Black and Gold Invitational on Sunday. The Blue Devils, who had their home meet on Saturday canceled due to the winter weather, totalled 117.5 points in the nine team field.
Freshmen Wileshka Samuel and Erica Snape finished fifth and sixth in the 100 meter dash with times of 12.49 and 12.57 respectively.
Senior Sherise Truman was solid in her first time competing in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:00.36 to finish in second. Junior Tayler Boncal was fourth in 1:01.55.
In the 800 meter dash it was freshman Clara Drozdowski who led CCSU with a fifth place finish in 2:31.89. Sophomore Morgan Ricci was eighth in 2:56.30.
Freshman Megan Brawner was 11th in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:56.02. Sophomore Madeline Mondo was right behind in 4:57.61, a new personal record.
The Blue Devils went 1-2-3 in the 100 meter hurdles as junior Melissa Wolliston finished first in a time of 14.21. Her time was a new personal best and an ECAC qualifying time. Senior Sarah Hicks was second in 14.77 and freshman Hailey Rospierski was third in 15.11.
Wolliston made it 2-for-2 in the hurdles with a win in the 400 meter hurdles in a time of 1:03.37.
The 4x100 meter relay team of Hicks, Truman, Snape and Samuel finished first in a time of 48.95.
Rospierski continued her solid meet with a tie for first place in the high jump with a height of 1.60 meters. Freshman Kadizha Benjamin was third with a height of 1.55 meters.
Freshman Valeria Hernandez was fifth in the shot put with a distance of 10.59 meters. She finished sixth in the discus with a throw of 32.42 meters. Sophomore Abrah Toomey finished sixth in the hammer with a throw of 40.44 meters, a new personal best.
Freshman Gianna D'Amato won the javelin with a throw of 39.30 meters, almost a meter longer than the second place finisher. Toomey was third with a throw of 37.95 meters, another personal best throw for the sophomore.
