Women's Track Ties for Seventh at NECs
The Blue Devils earned two bronze medals Sunday to finish out NEC competition.
The Central Connecticut women's track and field team tied for seventh overall at the 2014 NEC Outdoor Championships after the final day of competition on Sunday. CCSU was led on day two by sophomores Ally Gates and Alyssa Gonzalez who each earned a bronze medal.
Gates finished third in the 3,000m steeplechase with her time of 11:17.76 to post six points for CCSU and kick off Sunday's track competition.
Gonzalez finished third in the 400m hurdles after placing fifth in yesterday's prelims. The sophomore crossed the line in a personal-best time of 1:03.47 for six more points. She was followed by senior Shelby Tuttle in fifth with her time of 1:04.72.
Tuttle also raced the 100m hurdles in which she posted a new career-best time of 14.26. Her finish tallied five more points for CCSU and qualified her for ECAC competition.
Freshman Brittany Mendelson also placed fourth for the Blue Devils Sunday. She followed up her 4:51.31 performance from Saturday's prelims with a 4:40.54 showing in the finals.
In the 4x100m relay, a squad consisting of Gonzalez, Tuttle, freshman Sherise Truman and junior Ronea Saunders finished fourth in an ECAC qualifying time of 47.66.
After finishing eighth in the 800m prelims yesterday, junior Taylor LePage pulled out a fifth-place performance with her time of 2:18.40 on Sunday to contribute four more CCSU team points.
The 4x400m squad finished sixth in 3:53.13 while in the field events, sophomore Chelse Terry registered a distance of 37.83 meters to total another four points, collectively.
LIU Brooklyn claimed the women's championship with 134.50 points, followed by Sacred Heart (132) and Robert Morris (131.50). Mount St. Mary's took fourth (96) while Saint Francis U rounded out the top five with 80 points. The Blue Devils registered 57 to tie Bryant for seventh.
