Gonzalez Hurdles New Career Best at Monmouth
Sophomore Alyssa Gonzalez clocked a time of 1:04.06 in the 400m on Saturday, topping her previous career best by almost four seconds.
The Central Connecticut women's track and field meet completed the second competition of its outdoor season on Saturday at the Monmouth Season Opener hosted by Monmouth University. In addition to first-place finishes by senior Shelby Tuttle and junior Ronea Saunders, sophomore Alyssa Gonzalez demonstrated a strong performance registering a new career-best time in the 400m hurdles.
Gonzalez finished second overall in the 400m hurdles with her time of 1:04.06. Her time Saturday surpasses her previous career best of 1:08.01 by nearly four seconds which she set at the CCSU Track Meet last weekend in New Britain, CT.
Gonzalez was joined in the field by Tuttle who finished third with her time of 1:05.25. Tuttle also earned an individual victory, one of just two for CCSU on the day, in the 100m hurdles. She claimed the gold with her time of 15.02 seconds, crossing the finish line before freshman Melissa Wolliston (16.07) and Gonzalez (16.10).
Saunders also earned a gold medal for CCSU, clearing a height of 1.75m in the high jump, tying her own CCSU outdoor record. She also clocked a new career-best time in the 200m dash, placing second overall with her time of 26.44 seconds.
Sophomore Ally Gates earned a silver medal for Central in the 3,000m steeplechase race. She crossed the finish line in 11:32.89, setting a new career-best time in the event.
In the 800m run, junior Taylor LePage finished first in her heat, claiming fourth overall, with her time of 2:22.32. She was followed by freshman Jazmin Booker who finished second in her heat with a time of 2:29.25.
Sophomore Chelse Terry represented Central in the field events, placing third overall in the discus throw with her distance of 36.0 meters.
The Blue Devils are scheduled to return to the track this Friday, April 4, when they travel to Stanford.
