The Blue Devils will begin the 2014 NEC Indoor Track and Field Championships this Saturday, Feb. 8, at 9:30 a.m. and continue through Sunday.
The Central Connecticut women's track and field team will kick off the 2014 NEC Indoor Track and Field Championships this Saturday, February 8, at Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, MD. Competition is set to begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 8, and continue through Sunday, February 9.
Last season, the Blue Devils finished eighth overall, registering 37.0 team points. Former NEC school Monmouth took the gold, tallying a score of 162.5. In second was LIU Brooklyn who earned 100.0 team points, followed by Sacred Heart (71.0) and Saint Francis U (64.0). Robert Morris rounded out the top five with 50.0 points.
Last season, Ronea Saunders was the only Blue Devil to earn a title at the championships, leaping 1.70 meters (5' 7") in the high jump event. Saunders has performed well this year as a junior, earning three NEC Field Athlete of Week honors while also landing tied for 23rd in NCAA Division I with her jump of 1.78 meters earlier this season.
Also performing well for the Blue Devils this season has been freshman Brittany Mendelson. Mendelson has earned two NEC Rookie of the Week awards in her freshman campaign for her performances in the mile and the 800m run.
In her first collegiate attempt at the mile run, Mendelson registered the second-fasted time in the NEC, 5:00.63, earning her first NEC weekly award. Her mile time is also more than seven seconds better than the winning mark at the 2013 NEC Indoor Track and Field Championships.
