Women's T&F Opens Indoor Season at BU
Junior Ronea Saunders placed first in the high jump clearing 1.75 meters.
The Central Connecticut women's track and field team opened its 2013-14 indoor season on Saturday at the Boston University Season Opener. Junior Ronea Saunders led the Blue Devils as she earned CCSU's only first-place finish, registering a height of 1.75 meters in the high jump event.
In addition to Saunders' impressive performance, the Blue Devils tallied five other top-five performances, including two from sophomore Chelse Terry. Terry claimed second in the shot put with a distance of 11.55 meters, and fourth in the weight throw, throwing for 13.67 meters. Terry was followed in the weight throw by freshman Alleah Red in 10th (11.55m).
Senior Shelby Tuttle, CCSU record-holder in the indoor 60m hurdles (8.91), placed third in the event Saturday crossing the finish line in 8.99 seconds. She was followed by a trio of Blue Devils in seventh, eighth and ninth: freshman Melissa Wolliston (9.58), freshman Sarah Hicks (9.60) and sophomore Alyssa Gonzalez (9.70).
In the 1,000m run, junior Taylor LePage placed fourth, crossing the finish line in a career-best time of 3:11.38.
In the 5,000m run, senior Krisztina Dearborn finished fifth, clocking a time of 17:32.82.
Freshman Jazmin Booker, who competed for CCSU during the 2012 cross country season, placed seventh in the one mile run with her time of 5:29.07.
In the 500m dash, junior Janean McCalla crossed the finish line in 1:21.01, good for eighth place.
CCSU also competed in the 4x400 meter relay event. The squad comprised of Red, Gonzalez, Tuttle and sophomore Alessandra Salmon finished in sixth, registering a time of 4:03.01. Central also placed ninth in the event. The team, made up of Booker, McCalla, Wolliston and freshman Sherise Truman crossed the finish line in a time of 4:07.81.
The Blue Devils placed fifth overall with 50 team points. Northeastern claimed first with 132 points followed by Boston College (110), UMASS-Lowell (99) and Boston University (55). Bryant (28) and Marist (15) placed sixth and seventh, respectively.
Central will have almost a month to prepare for its next meet. The Blue Devils will travel to New Haven, CT for the Yale Invitational on Jan. 11.
