Swimming & Diving Wins Connecticut Cup
Abbey Keane won the 1,650 on Saturday for the Blue Devils, one of seven individual victories.
The Central Connecticut women's swimming and diving team topped the overall standings at the two-day Connecticut Cup hosted by Wesleyan University. The Blue Devils scored 774 points to best the host by a point for the team title.
Jewelle Maziarz earned victories on both boards while Katie Czulewicz earned the top spot in the 200 and 500 freestyles, to account for four of the Blue Devils seven individual wins at the two-day event.
200 Free Relay
- Katie Czulewicz, Megan Dunningan, Shannon Welcome and Gabby Spaciano opened the meet with a second-place finish, touching at 1:38.76, which each split between 24.29 and 24.95
500 Freestyle
- Czulewicz gave the Blue Devils their first individual win, touching first with a swim of 5:08.39
- Abbey Keane placed second, with a 5:10.48 and Welcome placed fifth at 5:16.98
200 IM
- Morgan O'Hara was the squad's top finisher in the 200 IM with a swim of 2:12.70
50 Freestyle
- Spaciano, 25.09, placed ninth, the only Blue Devil in the top-10
1-Meter Diving
- Jewelle Maziarz led a dominant Blue Devil diving performance, scoring 239.25 to capture the low board
- Elyse Boothroyd picked up 235.60 points for second place, while Zoe Baker finished fourth with 208.90 points
400 Medley Relay
- Dunningan, Ella Discala, Welcome and Czulewicz combined for a fourth-place finish in a time of 3:59.65
- Nathalie Pena, O'Hara, Jillena Plowucha and Spaciano finished eighth with a time of 4:04.81
100 Butterfly
- Welcome and Dunningan placed fourth and fifth, touching at 1:00.05 and 1:00.10 respectively
- Discala also finished in the top-10, touching at 1:00.79
400 IM
- Wroblewski gave CCSU its second win, using a dominant breaststroke leg to pull away for a nearly five second victory, 4:39.09
- O'Hara, 4:47.08, Kyla Behrle, 4:50.96, Kaylin McMahon,4:51.09, and Abby Bacon, 4:54.89, all placed in the top-10
200 Freestyle
- Czulewicz picked up another win with a time of 1:55.17
- Welcome placed third, touching at 1:56.36, while Kelly Stotler (1:58.63), placed seventh and Keane (1:59.69) touched eighth
100 Breaststroke
- Discala tagged the Blue Devils third consecutive win with a 1:05.79 effort, with a 1.33 second margin
- O'Hara (1:09.91) and Wroblewski (1:10.65) finished eighth and ninth respectively
100 Backstroke
- Dunningan touched sixth, .14 seconds out of third, with a 1:00.11
- Kelly Stotler finished in a time of 1:00.61, good for eighth, while Czulewicz touched at 1:00.68, good for ninth pace
3-Meter Diving
- Maziarz completed her sweep of the diving events, totaling 229.65
- Boothroyd placed third, collecting 209.55 points
200 Medley Relay
- Kelly Stotler, Discala, Welcome and Czulewicz touched at 1:49.97, good for third place
- Dunningan, O'Hara, Wroblewski and Spaciano combined for an eighth-place effort, with a swim of 1:52.92
1,650 Freestyle
- Keane picked up gold in the 1,650, with a 17:45.62
- Taylor Demarest finished in seventh place with a swim of 18:56.91
200 Backstroke
- Dunningan earned a runner-up finish, with a swim of 2:09.03
- Pena earned an eighth-place finish with a time of 2:11.93
100 Freestyle
- Welcome led three Blue Devils in the top-10, with a 53.82 effort that was good for fourth place
- Spaciano touched in sixth place, 54.04, while Czulewicz touched at 54.54, good for 10th
200 Breaststroke
- O'Hara was the team's top finisher, placing fifth at 2:28.73, followed by Discala in sixth place, with a swim of 2:28.99
- Bacon rounded out the top-10 swims with a ninth-place finish at 2:32.22
200 Butterfly
- Wroblewski gave CCSU a fourth-place finish with a swim of 2:13.69
- Kyla Behrle touched at 2:15.04, in fifth place, while Plowucha touched 10th at 2:18.65
400 Freestyle Relay
- Czulewicz, Kelly Stotler, Welcome and Spaciano swam to a fourth-place finish with a time of 3:37.01
- Dunningan, O'Hara' Keane and McMahon finished the race at 3:44.61, in eighth-place
