Valentina Gomez Named Northeast Conference Swimmer of the Week
Sophomore won three individual and one relay event in Saturday's win
Sophomore Valentina Gomez was named the Northeast Conference Swimmer of the Week for the third team this season after a dominating performance in a dual meet victory over LIU Brooklyn on Saturday. Gomez won three individual events and added a relay victory in the win over the Blackbirds. It's the third time she has won the honor this season and the fifth time a CCSU swimmer has won the award.
Gomez won all four races she competed in, while posting the NEC's best time of the season in the 200 butterfly. She beat the field by a whopping 13 seconds, completing the race in 2:05.12. Blossoming in her second collegiate season, Gomez also took first place in the 100 butterfly (58.37) and the 400 IM (4:34.14). She contributed to the Blue Devil relay team as well helping CCSU to a 200 medley win in which she swam the butterfly leg in 26.81.
The Blue Devils won their last two dual meets of the season, at home vs. Sacred Heart and on the road vs. LIU, and will now prepare for the NEC Championships beginning on Wednesday, Feb. 21 at the Nassau County Aquatic Center. The Blue Devils are looking for their fourth straight NEC title in swimming and diving.
