Swimming and Diving Competes at Northeastern, Durham Qualifies for NCAA Zones in Diving

The Central Connecticut swimming and diving team traveled to Boston for a dual meet with Northeastern on Saturday.  The Huskies topped the Blue Devils 164-117.  Central returns home to face Sacred Heart in a sprint meet on Friday, Jan. 26 at 6 p.m.  The Blue Devils will honor their five seniors prior to the meet.

In Saturday's meet, Central began with a runner-up finish in the 200 yard medley relay.  The team of sophomore Alexis Fredricks, senior Maddy Garber, sophomore Valentina Gomez and junior Kaitlyn Troy swam a time of 1:50.75 to earn four points.  

Senior Lauren Czulewicz won the 200 yard freestyle event in a time of 1:57.26.  Sophomore Gracie Regan was third in 1:58.83 and Alexis Fredricks was fifth in 2:01.68.

Sophomore Keelin Kendall fnished fourth in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:03.04.  Senior Maeve Awiszus was fifth in 1:03.40 and freshman Ivy Milne was sixth in 1:11.18. Garber finished second in the 100 yard breaststroke in a time of 1:06.01.  Sophomore Erika Maercklein was fourth in 1:08.27 and sophomore Grace Fredricks was fifth in 1:11.19.

Gomez finished second in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:07.69.  Senior Luna Milne was sixth in the same event in 2:24.52. Czulewicz was third in the 50 yard freestyle in 24.99.  Troy was fifth in 25.55 and Alexis Fredricks was sixth in 26.56.

Senior Annemarie Durham finished fourth in the 3 meter diving event with a score of 252.68.  Czulewicz finished second in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 54.28.  She later posted a score of 268.81 in the 1 meter event.  Durham's score in the 1 meter event qualifies her for the NCAA Zone Regionals for the second straight season.

Junior Aidan Devers won the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:05.58.  Awiszus was fifth in 2:16.31.  Garber won the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:22.53.  Regan was second in 2:27.13.

Devers finished second in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:15.03.  Maercklein was third in 5:15.11 in the same event.  Gomez finished third in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:00.00.

Garber's time of 2:12.96 in the 200 yard IM was the third best time in the race.  Gomez posted a time of 2:13.68, fourth best.

The 200 yard freestyle relay team of Czulewicz, Maercklein, Troy and Alexis Fredricks posted a time of 1:41.70, the second fastest in the race.
