Blue Devils Swim Past Sacred Heart on Senior Day Sunday
Garber breaks pool record in 200 breaststroke on Sunday
The Central Connecticut swimming and diving team posted a 163-87 home victory over visiting Sacred Heart on Sunday. Prior to the dual meet the Blue Devils honored the four seniors on their roster. Seniors Kaitlyn Beaver, Selene Chilton, Alaina Papiro and Reyna Zascirinskis were swimming for one of the last times in the Jack Suydam Natatorium at CCSU.
Central began the meet with a 1-2 finish in the 200 yard medley relay. The team of freshman Aidan Devers, Papiro, Chilton and Zascirinskis finished in 1:52.83 to claim first place. Central's team of junior Stephanie Czulewicz, freshman Kailey Demers, sophomore Luna Milne and freshman Victoria Poole were second in 1:56.54.
The Blue Devils placed three of the top four swimmers in the 1000 yard freestyle, including sophomore Maeve Awiszus who placed first in 10:51.69. Junior Julia St. Pierre (11:18.25) was second and Milne (12:02.86) were third in the race.
Sophomore Lauren Czulewicz placed first in the 200 yard freestyle in a time of 1:56.32. Sophomore teammate Lauren Rasile was second in 1:58.48 and Zascirinskis was fourth with a time of 2:01.56.
The Blue Devils finished 1-2-3 in the 100 backstroke as freshman Kaitlyn Troy was first in 1:00.10, Stephanie Czulewicz was second in 1:00.20 and sophomore Maddy Garber was third in 1:03.51.
They also placed 1-2-3 in the 100 yard breastroke as Papiro won in a time of 1:05.41, Demers was second in 1:07.75 and Devers was third in 1:13.02.
A third straight sweep came in the 200 yard butterfly as junior Lisa Ward won in a time of 2:11.19. Chilton was second (2:15.24) and freshman Mollie Coleman finished third with a time of 2:18.43.
Lauren Rasile won the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 24.42, followed closely in second place by Lauren Czulewicz in 24.85. Poole was fourth with a time of 26.88.
Sophomore Annemarie Durham took first place in the 3 meter diving with a score of 233.20, followed in second by Beaver at 218.70 and freshman teammate Brianna Buehler with a score of 190.95.
Junior Sabree Thomas finished second in the 100 yard freestyle as the Blue Devils placed second and fourth in the event. Her time was 55.23. Poole was fourth with a time of 58.43.
Devers claimed first place in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:05.19. Troy was second at 2:13.75 and sophomore Katie MacDonnell placed third with a time of 2:14.35 as the Blue Devils posted another 1-2-3 finish.
Garber won the 200 breaststroke and set a new pool record in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:19.25. Demers was second at 2:24.43 and Papiro was third with a time of 2:24.60.
Zascirinskis finished first in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:20.89, ahead of Chilton who was second at 5:25.02 and junior Christine Rasile who was third in 5:26.59.
Thomas posted a win in the 100 yard butterfly in 58.48, topping Ward (59.18) and freshman Grace Moriarty (1:03.79) as the Blue Devils posted another 1-2-3 finish.
Beaver was first in the 1 meter diving event with a score of 229.00, followed by Durham at 227.00 and Buehler at 179.00.
Stephanie Czulewicz was first in the 400 yard individual medley with a time of 4:46.48, followed by MacDonnell at 4:48.92 and Coleman was third in 4:53.58. The team of Christine Rasile, Devers, St. Pierre and Troy were first in the 200 yard freestyle relay at 1:42.31. Lauren Rasile, Thomas, Garber and Ward were third in 1:43.32 and Lauren Czulewicz, Papiro, Chilton and Zascirinskis finished fourth in 1:45.67.
The Blue Devils will be back in action twice this week, beginning at home vs. LIU Brooklyn on Friday at 4 p.m. They will travel to Wagner on Saturday afternoon for their final meet before the Northeast Conference Championships on Feb. 24-27 at MIT.
