Dwyer and Gulia Earn NEC Weekly Honors
Junior Kaitlyn Dwyer was named NEC Diver of the Week and senior Kristina Gulia was named NEC Co-Swimmer of the Week on Tuesday.
The Central Connecticut swimming and diving team picked up two NEC weekly honors on Tuesday as senior Kristina Gulia was tabbed NEC Co-Swimmer of the Week while junior Kaitlyn Dwyer was named NEC Diver of the Week for their impressive performances at the Blue Devils' final home meet of the 2013-14 season this past weekend.
Gulia, coming off of two national-qualifying performances at the Austin Grand Prix in Austin, TX, helped lead the Blue Devils to their tri-meet win on senior day. She claimed two individual gold medals at the meet against NEC foes Sacred Heart and Saint Francis Brooklyn while also helping CCSU take the 400 medley relay with a time of 4:02.81. She finished first in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke with times of 1:07.48 and 2:25.97, respectively.
Gulia is the first CCSU swimmer to earn the NEC Co-Swimmer of the Week accolade this season. She shares the honor with Saint Francis U's Danyel Johnson.
Dwyer is the third Blue Devil to earn the NEC Diver of the Week honor this season. The junior shattered her previous season-best 1-meter score of 214.65 on Saturday. She earned first place overall in the event with her score of 228.50. Dwyer also registered a score of 205.25 from the 3-meter board.
Dwyer's honor also marks the seventh week out of 10 that a Central diver has brought the NEC Diver of the Week award home to New Britain.
The Blue Devils will return to the pool when they travel to Wagner this Saturday, Feb. 1. This weekend's dual-meet will serve as the final tune-up before the 2014 Northeast Conference Championships.
