Women's Soccer to Face Georgetown in NCAA Tournament
The Central Connecticut women's soccer team will take on the Georgetown Hoyas in the first round of the 2021 Women's College Cup this Saturday at noon. The NCAA announced the matchups for this year's Tournament during the NCAA Tournament selection show on Monday. The Blue Devils won their fourth straight Northeast Conference Championship on Sunday, shutting out Fairleigh Dickinson, 3-0. CCSU has won a league-high 12 conference championships, the most in the NEC.
Central went 13-5 overall and 8-2 in conference action this season. The team leads the league in both goals per game (1.61) and goals against average (0.78). The Blue Devils have the NEC Midfielder of the Year, Roma McLaughlin, NEC Devensive Player of the Year, Erica Bardes, as well as five First Team All-Conference selections and two All-Rookie First Team selections. Head coach Mick D'Arcy was named the 2021 NEC Coach of the Year for the eighth time in his career.
The Hoyas went 13-1-6 this season and 7-1-2 in their conference. They took home the Big East Championship this past weekend with wins over Butler and St. John's.
CCSU and Georgetown also faced off in the Women's College Cup in 2018, the first season of CCSU's back-to-back-to-back-to-back NEC Championship run.
The Blue Devils have two wins in the Women's College Cup, one coming in 2003 over Boston College and the most recent being a 1-0 shutout over Rutgers in 2019. The Blue Devils faced off against West Virginia in the next round and were close to making it to the next, but were defeated in double overtime.
